Postcards from the Frontier
Postcards from the Frontier is an anthropological photo-documentary series that explores the post-colonial European frontier of Central and Northern Australia. Now, 100 years after the first massive enterprise ventures that funded the colonization of Aboriginal land in Northern Australia. The original industries are no longer operating properly and many of the buildings are decaying away back into the landscape. The impact of this colonial era still resonates today through the landscape in the ruin churches, over-grown stock yards, town camps littered with empty beer cans, old Chinese restaurants, ring-barked canoe trees and British buildings just to highlight few. This series attempts to highlight how the European frontier has struggled to sustain itself in Northern Australia and how it has had a negative impact on Aboriginal people and their traditional lands.
This series was influenced by the early Anthropologists and their documentation of the European frontier of Central and Northern Australia. Many Anthropologist such as Tindale, Gillen, Spencer, Foelsche are` better known for their documentation of Aboriginal people. Also photographed the European expansion into the Australian landscape on their travels. Many of these photographs are records of the early industries that took place in the area. This series attempts to add to the historical records with a new contemporary recording of the European frontier of Central and Northern Australia.
